Matthew Moran's training is in field ecology. For basic research, he has published work on grassland ecology, predator-prey interactions, plant-animal interactions and insect ecology. His applied research focuses on land use, in particular how the energy industry is developing and fragmenting landscapes. He has been a professor at Hendrix College, a small liberal arts institution, since 1996, primarily teaching ecology and evolution, zoology, field ecology and natural history. He also has taught interdisciplinary courses for first-year students that focus on human philosophy and history.
